Download Books & Movies

The Manchester City Library is pleased to offer our patrons the ability to download free ebooks, magazines, audio books, music, videos, and graphic novels to their e-readers and mobile devices. Read below to learn more about our digital services and how they work.

Please note that digital titles, once checked out, may be streamed online, or viewed within a web browser on our public computers. If you wish to download titles for offline use, however, you'll need to use your own device. You may download digital titles using our public wifi, but not our public computers.

News:

9/30/2024 -- Hoopla is back! We missed it just as much as you did. Starting October 1, 2024, Manchester City Library cardholders can once again borrow ebooks, audiobooks, music and movies through Hoopla! For budget reasons we've changed our lending limits to 3 Instant Borrows (no waiting) and 2 Flex Borrows (one copy/one user at a time) per month.

03/19/2024 -- Changes to Android OS Support for Overdrive/Libby/Kanopy. As of April 15, 2024, Android 7.1.1 will be the earliest supported Android OS for all OverDrive apps and websites, including Libby and Kanopy. Started March 25, impacted users will see a message to update their OS or switch to another supported device to continue using the app.

What Hoopla offers:

  • Ebooks, including graphic novels! (21 day loan)
  • Audiobooks (21 day loan)
  • Music (7 day loan)
  • Movies and TV (3 day loan)
  • 3 Instant Borrows (no waiting) and 2 Flex Borrows (one copy/one user at a time) per month

To use Hoopla, you will need:

  • A current Manchester City Library card with less than $40.00 in fines. Please see our Circulation Policies for information on what documentation you'll need to obtain or renew a library card.
  • A PC, tablet, smartphone, streaming device, or other compatible device.
  • A Hoopla account. You'll need to create a Hoopla account before signing in.
  • For mobile devices, you'll need to install the Hoopla app for iOS, Android, or Kindle Fire HDX. There is no app required for desktop use. To download the app for your streaming device, please see Hoopla's Supported Device section for instructions.
  • Internet access.

Kanopy

What Kanopy offers:

  • Documentaries: Over 15,000 documentaries on all topics from the environment to race and social justice.
  • Foreign Films: over 2,000 foreign films in 180 languages
  • The Great Courses: Interested in learning French? How to draw? The Great Courses have you covered! Once you begin a course, you have access to all of its episodes for 21 days, and each series will cost 5 tickets. 
  • Movies: Over 9,000 movies including great selection of early cinema
  • Learning cinema: including the Great Courses collection, over 1,500 K-12 curriculum films, career development films, language learning, and lifestyle content (yoga, cooking, etc)
  • Local content: the collection’s breadth provides access to a wide array of films from local filmmakers and on issues of local and regional relevance
  • Kanopy Kids: A tightly curated collection of the best programs for children aged 2-12, launched in partnership with Common Sense Media, the leading rating/review source for parents. You'll have unlimited access that does not count towards your 15 monthly tickets!
  • Accessibility: Kanopy is the only platform to meet full accessibility standards – (1) all films have captions and transcripts; (2) films are compatible with visual impairment technologies; and (3) films provide special disability settings for patrons.

To use Kanopy, you will need:

  • A current Manchester City Library card with less than $40.00 in fines. Please see our Circulation Policies for information on what documentation you'll need to obtain or renew a library card. 
  • A PC, tablet, smartphone, TV streaming device, or other compatible device.
  • A Kanopy account.
  • For mobile devices, you'll need to install the Kanopy app for iOS, Android, or Kindle Fire.
  • Kanopy TV apps include: Apple TV and Airplay, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Samsung Smart TV, Roku, Telstra TV, and Chromecast.
  • There is no app required for desktop use. Simply stream directly from the Kanopy website.
  • Internet access.

  • Magazines

To use Overdrive, you will need:

  • A current Manchester City Library card with less than $40.00 in fines. Please see our Circulation Policies for information on what documentation you'll need to obtain or renew a library card.
  • An e-reader, tablet, smartphone, or other compatible device.
  • Libby app/software or use the Libby Web app at libbyapp.com 
  • Internet access.

Cloud Library offers:

To use Cloud Library, you will need:

  • A current Manchester City Library card with less than $40.00 in fines. Please see our Circulation Policies for information on what documentation you'll need to obtain or renew a library card.
  • An e-reader, tablet, smartphone, or other compatible device with the Cloud Library app/Software.
  • Now compatible with e-ink readers like nook and kobo! Click here to find out how. 
  • Internet access.
  • Your library card PIN/password  (defaulted to the last 4 digits of your phone number. Contact circulation to re-set your PIN).

  • For some content, you'll need Adobe Digital Editions software and account.
  • That's it! This is not a library-sponsored resource, so you can download ebooks, even if you don't have a library card!
